Geography of Taiwan
There are a number of islands in the Pacific and the Taiwan Strait which are part of the Republic of China. Taiwan is the main island covering a major part of the land under the administration of Taiwan.
Mountain ranges stretch over an expanse of about two-thirds of the total area of Taiwan. Out of 258 peaks, Jade Mountain (Yushan) is the tallest mountain in northeast Asia with an altitude of 13,042 ft. While mountains dictate over the rocky eastern coast and the center of Taiwan, the western part of the island hosts a major part of the population of the country because of its extremely alluvial plains.
