When did Taiwan become Independent of China?

After long conflicts with China, in 1990, Taiwanese people supported the idea of full independence but Beijing is not ready to accept that Taiwan should get international recognition. In spite of the fact that Beijing was furious with this idea, the Taiwanese people gave their full support to the same.

There came about an important shift in domestic politics of Taiwan with the death of Chiang Ching-Kuo in 1998. Lee Teng-Hui, his successor, declared himself as the president of Taiwan. Finally, Chen Shui-Bian, a candidate of Democratic progressive party (the main opposition party) became the president of Taiwan. Though this party lacked majority, it became the largest party. Taiwan still has not got full independence as far as international recognition is concerned and only 28 countries against 160 have given their support to Taiwan’s freedom.
